Composed of nine communities, Washington County has a total population of approximately 141,895 and a land area of 458 square miles.

Washington County is a major industrial and transportation hub in the mid-Atlantic region. Interstates 81, 70 and 68, coupled with excellent rail service, provide easy market access and distribution. The Hagerstown Regional Airport is a fully instrumental airfield with daily commuter service to major destinations. Hagerstown, the county seat and business center, is Maryland’s sixth largest city and is easily accessible to both Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Washington County’s 3,340 businesses employ 57,700 workers. Approximately 93 of these businesses have 100 or more workers. Key employers include CertainTeed, Citicorp Credit Services, D.M. Bowman, FedEx Ground, First Data Merchant Services, Good Humor-Breyer’s Ice Cream, Home Depot Direct, Lenox Distribution, Mountainside Teleport (a subsidiary of Intelsat Global Services, Corp.), Rayloc/Genuine Parts, Review & Herald Publishing Association, Staples Distribution, and Volvo Powertrain North America.

Washington County has more than 20 industrial, technology and business parks, Foreign Trade Zone #255, and three state designated Enterprise Zones. Major tourist attractions include the Antietam National Battlefield, the C&O Canal National Park, and Fort Frederick State Park.
