Historical Hikes and Bikes

Explore Fort Frederick, - a stone fort that was the site of Maryland's frontier defense during the French and Indian War.  The site of Maryland's frontier defense during the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the Fort's stone wall and two barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. Historic displays are in the Fort, barracks and Visitor Center. The park annually holds military reenactments and other special events. Park lands adjoin the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal passes through park acreage. Tours are available by request.

 

Located just one-half mile west of Fort Frederick is the Western Maryland Rail Trail, a 23-mile long paved path that follows the former Western Maryland Railway line. The Rails to Trails Conservancy, a non-profit organization, recently chose the Western Maryland Rail Trail as one of the top 12 trails in the United States for viewing fall foliage. The peak foliage season in Western Maryland begins in mid October, and provides an excellent opportunity for picturesque photography along the trail.

 

Visit Hancock, MD, where historic sites are now recreational opportunities along the the C&O Canal.  Preserving America’s colorful Canal era and transportation history, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is 184.5 miles of adventure. Originally, the C&O Canal was a lifeline for communities and businesses along the Potomac River as coal, lumber, grain and other agricultural products floated down the canal to market. Today millions of visitors hike or bike the C&O Canal each year to enjoy the natural, cultural and recreational opportunities available.

Biking is a favorite activity here.  C&O Bicycle is located in Hancock, Maryland.  Their unique shop offers bicycle rentals, repairs, and sales.  They also have a screened-in bunkhouse for weary travelers to rest.  Their general store is the perfect place to stop for a snack, a drink, or necessary supplies before hitting the trails. 301-678-6665.

Be sure to stop at Hepburn’s Orchards for a fresh baked pie. For over 40 years, Hepburn Orchards Fruit Market has been owned and operated by the Hepburn Family... and they have maintained the old-fashioned, country atmosphere by still providing fresh fruits, vegetables, and friendly faces!  Lunch or dinner at Weaver’s Restaurant, a favorite of locals and tourists for 50+ years.  Their baked goods are irresistable.
